planning my pieces meticulously is something i almost never do. i think that sometimes the best pieces come from a ~flow~ state that allows for the unexpected in my process, and letting go of control. it’s great practice for me as life is unpredictable and sometimes we have no control over things that happen to us. when i allow myself to play, i’m almost always happier with the results. i’ll learn about new patterns or textures that are satisfying to mold with my hands, or find myself identifying with a new character. this piece was made in spring. it started off as an oddly shaped rock that grew vines, then spikes, and then more life. i originally applied underglaze a little too thick causing it to flake off during bisque fire. instead of redoing it, i ended up enjoying the texture and peeled more of the flaking underglaze away. i decided the flaking went well with the goopy drops of a new special effects glaze i wanted to try out. this piece is best viewed by looking at it from all different angles.
